Para os que se perguntaram de onde saiu o desenho de ontem, aqui fica a resposta: os personagens foram  rabiscos numa toalha de papel de mesa para entreter a Mariana. Depois, com o papel rasgado e de volta ao estúdio, mostrei-lhe como se punham as cores no computador (esperemos que não o queira trocar pelos seus lápis de cera...). Qualquer dia tenho-a aqui a colorir as minhas ilustrações... ;)

For those who wondered where yesterday´s drawing came from, here's the answer:The characters were scribbled on a table paper towel while entertaining Mariana. Then, with that same piece of paper back at the studio, I showed her how to colour it on the computer (if I´m lucky she won´t ask me to trade it for her crayons...). Any day now, she´ll be colouring my illustrations... ;)

In order to clear all doubts, here´s the sketchbook where the drawing was done. As you can see, it was all part of a wider process, from the selection of the line work sketch to the colouring. All this is visible on this page, from a sketchbook far from being "unblemished".

Com este meu esboço a cores fez-se a prova da capa e tudo batia certo :) Definimos que seria um conjunto de quinze personagens diferentes, dispostos numa grelha de 4x4. Agora só me faltava enviar a que seria a ilustração final...

The cover lay-out test done with my coloured sketch was OK :) At the end we settled for a group of fifteen different characters organised in a 4x4 grid. Now, I just had to send them my final illustration...

O rascunho da ideia foi suficiente para que me propusessem ter a ilustração na capa :) No seguimento da qual, lhes mandei um segundo esboço, já com cor, mais aproximado do que queria fazer, para ser testado numa prova da capa.

The first rough draft of this idea was accepted and they invited me to do it for the magazine´s cover :) It was then, I sent them a second coloured sketch, closer to what I had in mind, to be tested for the cover´s lay-out.

O Nick Mrozowski, Director de Arte do jornal i, pediu-me uma ilustração para um tema sobre uma rede social, tipo Facebook, mas que promovia encontros sexuais entre os seus membros. O tema teria a participação de outros ilustradores, sendo que, não sabendo ainda quem, um deles seria capa. A minha proposta era simples: criar um conjunto de personagens cujas caras lembravam órgãos sexuais. Estes poderiam ser postos individualmente dentro da revista ou aparecer dispostos em grelha na capa. Este foi o esboço que mandei para explicar a ideia...

Nick Mrozowski, Newspaper i Art Director, asked me for an illustration for an article about a social network, similar to Facebook, but that unlike this one promoted sexual encounters between their members. Other illustrators were working for the same article, knowing that one of them would have his work on the cover, although at this point we didn´t know who. My proposal was simple: to create a bunch of characters, whose faces reminded sexual organs. One could put them individually inside the magazine or organise a grid lay-out for the cover. This was the rough first draft I sent him to explain this idea...

Depois deste livro, embarquei noutra aventura com a Leonor Tenreiro: "O Carro do Pai", uma história divertidíssima para a qual estou já a fazer as ilustrações, mesmo sendo um projecto ainda à procura de editor... Em cima, podem ver a minha primeira planificação esboçada do livro.

After this book, I am working once more with Leonor Tenreiro in her "Dad´s car": a humorous story that I´m presently illustrating, although it is a project still searching for a publisher... Above, the first rough lay-out for the book.

"O HOMEM QUE IA CONTRA AS PORTAS"*: DRAFT

"O Homem que ia contra as portas" é um livro infantil publicado pela EVEREST em Junho de 2010, com o divertidíssimo texto da Leonor Tenreiro e as minhas ilustrações. Foi uma colaboração orientada pela editora Raquel Rosa e que já deu os seus frutos, visto ter recebido o prémio de "Melhor Ilustração Infantil" no 21º AmadoraBD 2010, o que nos dará direito a uma exposição individual deste trabalho, inserido na próxima edição deste Festival, em Outubro de 2011 (Yupiiiiii!!!!!). Até lá, mostrar-vos-ei esta semana as várias fases pela quais passou uma mesma ilustração: do "esboço" (passando pelo "lápis", "tinta" e "cor") até à sua "versão final" já com texto. Espero que gostem :)

*"The man that bumped against doors" is an illustrated childreen´s book, published by EVEREST, in June 2010, with a fun story written by Leonor Tenreiro and my images. It was given the "Best Childreen´s Illustrated Book" award by the Amadora Comics Festival in 2010, which means this book project will have its own exhibition at this year´s Festival, in October 2011 (Hurrayyyy!!!). Until then, I´ll be showing you the different working stages of the same illustration: from "draft" (going through "pencil", "ink" and "colour") to the "final version" already with the text in it. Hope you like it :)

...ou se calhar, sim! É o caso destas duas tentativas falhadas de fazer a ilustração para o Facebooker do passado Sábado, que combinadas entre si acabaram por resultar na ilustração final que podem ver abaixo. O tema e título do texto escrito pelo Edson Athayde era sobre um "Dom Quixote Baiano"...

...or maybe they do! As you can see in the two above failed attempts to do last Saturday´s Facebooker illustration. I ended up combining both into the final result that can be seen bellow these lines. The theme and title of Edson Athayde´s text was about a "Brazilian Don Quixote"...

Este Sábado é publicada mais uma das minhas ilustrações na crónica do Facebooker, escrita pelo Edson Athayde no verso do jornal i. Mas, como nem tudo sai à primeira, aproveito o dia de hoje para vos mostrar os dois desenhos preparatórios: um primeiro estudo (para aquecer a mão e plasmar a minha ideia para a imagem...) e o conjunto dos elementos coloridos da ilustração final, ainda por montar. Amanhã ponho no blog a versão final que foi impressa ;)

This Saturday, another of my Facebooker editorial illustrations will be out on paper. But in the meantime I wanted to show you how it was done: first as a warming up draft and then as a final coloured illustration, still not final since it needs to be assembled on the computer (it doesn´t always come out nice and clean, you know...). Tomorrow I´ll post the illustration that was finally published ;)
