PRAIA!!

---

I never loose Mariana from my eyesight, while she continues playing by the seaside. She jumps, spins, runs, sings in a constant back-and-forth between sand and water. She just doesn´t stop :) That´s being at the beach with Mariana.

After nine illustration workshops in the county schools, many encounters and re-encounters with fellow illustrators or people related to this profession, a new sketchbook filled with drawings and the "tragic" loss of a blue Viarco watercolour pencil with which I had been drawing these days :) I express my gratitude to everyone for invitating me to take part in this 6th International Illustration Meeting of Illustration of São João da Madeira and leave you with these fast sketch es of some of the students with whom I had the pleasure of drawing ;)

---
News from Warsaw: Still strolling through Ulica Wojciecha Górskiego, I stop at the n.º5 door step to draw what lays in front of me, with the ubiquitous Palace of Culture and Science on my sketchbook´s double page left side... As we approach the centre of Warsaw it is impossible to remain indifferent to this gigantic building that, whether you like it or not, is also part of the city... But this is yet another story to be told in a future post :)

Ul. Juliana Tuwima x Ul.

---
News from Warsaw: Two steps away from the constant buzz of Ulica Nowy Swiat, I take my time to wonder about investigating what might conceal the back streets, such as the intersection of Juliana Tuwima with Wojciecha Górskiego streets, where I stop to draw. A young kid who was with his mom, a leafy tree with flowers, a bust of someone famous, a building with clear dashes of modernism... everything seems trivial and stands out at the same time in the act of drawing, of seizing the moment that won´t happen again. As much as the rain that seemed to be looming up in the sky, but never got to fall...

Bus 122

---
News from Warsaw: On the same day I made these other sketches from inside a bus, I also did the above ones on bus 122. I spent the whole morning drawing on several bus lines, jumping from one to another. Looking at these sketches, it makes me think that reducing the time in a drawing has the same effect as a pressure cooker, by refining the end result...

Kopa cwila

Chovia. Mas nem por isso deixei de desenhar."
---
News from Warsaw: As noted in the drawing´s caption, "suburban park with artificial hill "Kopa cwila " with two "equestrian" statues. May 24, 2013. Dorota has shown me this area of the city. It was raining. But that didn´t stop me from drawing."

Ul Armii Ludowej x Ul. Marszalkowska

News from Warsaw: A few minutes to observe the intersection of Ul Armii Ludowej with Ul. Marszalkowska, with its buildings, trees, viaduct, cars, trams, people, public transport stop and a lot of urban furniture, was long enough to feel and draw the pulse of the city ...

Bus 520

---
News from Warsaw: There were days, out of curiosity and to escape the bad weather, when I got in a bus and I let myself go aimlessly. Taking advantage of the short time at bus stops or traffic lights to quickly draw what I saw from my window, virtually without looking at the pages of my sketchbook...

Ulica Litewska

---
News from Warsaw: When travelling I believe that all drawings count, even the most "inconsequential", because ultimately it is with all them that we make our journey. Here, on my way to a restaurant, I stopped a few minutes to draw Ulica (street) Litewska, looking for elements seemingly uninteresting to frame this spread...

Plac Na Rozdrozu (two)

News from Warsaw: Once again I try to sketch what I see from Plac (Square) Na Rozdrozu searching for a different view point and layout, merely for the pleasure of drawing.

"Patelnia"

---
News from Warsaw: "Centrum" is the name of the bus, tram and subway stop located at the "centre" area of Warsaw. There, at the crossroad of several underground access tunnels, we can find the open air lowered round shaped square commonly known as "Patelnia" (which means "Frying Pan"). A great spot to observe and draw all sort of people either passing through, waiting for someone or just using it as an hang out place :)

Warszawa Centralna

Ulica Nowy Swiat x Ulica Aleja Jerozolimskie

News from Warsaw: In my own experience, people's reaction when seeing somebody drawing are usually always a mixture of empathy and curiosity. All "urban sketchers" know it. But contrary to this, in Warsaw I felt a certain mistrust in the eyes of the people with whom I crossed. Perhaps there is a historical reason for this behaviour, since the Poles have had a turbulent past filled with wars and endurance during which they struggled to regain their sovereignty. And this was in my thoughts while drawing at the intersection of street Nowy Swiat with Aleja Jerozolimskie, where I also wrote: "Drawing under the sun and surrounded by city noises at the intersection of the two main roads of Warsaw. The man you see here stared at me, intrigued by what I was drawing. But did not dare to ask ... "

Ulica Bracka

---
News from Warsaw: Drawing on Ulica Bracka, minutes before arriving at the famous "Palm Tree" square which I can already see on my right side. This palm tree was, I am told, a temporary plastic sculpture from the same artist of the Plac Zbawiciela "Rainbow", this time intended to honor the mistreated Jews of Warsaw with an appeal to their return from Israel. Outcome aside, it appears it that ended up staying at the request of Varsovians who liked to have a permanent green palm tree even when the city reaches -23 ° C during the coldest days of winter ...

Ulica Nowy Swiat x Ulica Aleja Jerozolimskie

News from Warsaw: Sitting beside the statue in tribute to Charles De Gaulle at the crossroads of Ulica Nowy Swiat with Aleje Jerozolimskie, I indulge myself to the simple pleasure of observing and drawing people crossing to the other side of the equally famous "Palm Tree" square...

Powstania Warszawskiego Muzeum

---
News from Warsaw: this drawing caption says "On one side and on the other from where I stand, clouds are approaching and I'm not prepared for rain"... The threat of bad weather that would pour on the city later that day is the true protagonist of this sketch, forcing me to simplify my way of drawing and focus my attention to the increasingly clouded sky. And drawing thus becomes an experience where what you see, think and feel is just one and only thing :)

Warsaw Book Fair...

---
News from Warsaw: During the shared lecture I gave at the Book Fair of Warsaw with Paulo Monteiro (Beja Comic Festival Director and also Comic Book author), invited by the Camões Institute in Poland, I considered this as an opportunity to pursue my project and did this drawing of the audience. They were few people present, but all seemed interested. Also because of that, I managed the names of some of them. But what appears to be even more interesting is that, coincidence or not, I eventually came back to see some of these faces in other places in Warsaw ... There were times when the city seemed suspiciously small :)

Ulica Krucza 41-43

---
News from Warsaw: Drawings made at Ulica Krucza 41-43 during a day gradually grayer. Now I realise that giving my sketchbook this "vignettes" lay-out gave me more freedom to show multiple views of the same place...
